Moving to the United States can be a very enjoyable experience for you and your family. There are many things to do and plan for. To start with, persons entering the United States are classified as either Returning Residents or as Non-residents. Both Returning Residents and Non- residents are required to be in possession of certain documents prior to entry:     * United States citizens must have a U.S. passport or acceptable proof of citizenship in their possession.     * Resident aliens, non-citizens or nationals of another country who have acquired legal permanent residence in the United States must have either an alien registration receipt card, or a re-entry permit issued by the United States Immigration Service     * Immigrants, persons who have a visa allowing them to live permanently within the United States and who are coming to the U.S. for initial admission for permanent residence, must have in their possession a valid, unexpired passport, and an immigrant visa issued by the United States Consular Officer abroad.     * Non-immigrants, non-citizens or nationals of a country other than the United States who are proceeding to the U.S. temporarily on business and who have another country to which they will ultimately return, must have a valid, passport and a United States visa allowing admission. This group includes diplomats, students, visitors, temporary workers including intra company transferees.Non- residents of the United States may also have to provide other documents for personal entry. Check with the U.S. Department of Immigration for more information. What Can You Bring With You? Customs procedure provides that everything imported into the United States is dutiable unless specifically exempted. Personal effects such as wearing apparel, jewelery, toilet articles, and sports equipment which is in your possession before coming to the U.S. are duty free. Duty will be charged on articles adjudged by Customs to be new, so it is advisable to have receipts for any items which appear to be new but are more than one year old. Automobiles, trailers, motorcycles, airplanes, boats and similar vehicles for the transportation of yourself, your family and guests, are admitted duty free provided the vehicle is imported in connection with your arrival and is owned by you or on order prior to your arrival. You may use your valid foreign driver's licence or International Driver's Permit and your foreign license plates to drive from the port of entry to your destination. You may use these at your destination residence until residency is established. If you plan to import a car, ask the Consular Officer for a copy of the leaflet "Importing a Car' Some restricted items which require special import permits include biological materials, cultural artifacts, plants, fruits and vegetables, meats, livestock and poultry, firearms and ammunition, and merchandise originating in some countries. Prohibited items include absinthe, lottery tickets, narcotics and dangerous drugs, obscene articles and publications, treasonous materials, hazardous materials (e.g., fireworks, dangerous toys, toxic or poisonous substance), and other objects considered injurious or detrimental to the general welfare of the United States. If you regularly require any medicines containing habit-forming drugs or narcotics (i.e., cough medicines, diuretics, heart drugs, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, depressants, stimulants, etc.), you:     * may only enter such an amount as you might normally carry,     * must have them properly identified,     * and must have either a prescription or written statement from your personal physician that they are necessary for your personal well-being. U.S. or foreign currency, money orders, travelers cheques, and certain other negotiable instruments may be brought into the U.S. If you import an amount in excess of U.S. $10,000 or its equivalent in foreign currency, you are required to file a report with U.S. Customs. What About Pets All animals and birds are subject to United States Health, Agriculture, Wildlife, and Customs requirements, as well as controls imposed by laws and regulations of other Federal agencies. Before deciding to take your dog, cat or other pet to the United States, ask the Consular Officer or Customs Representative for the leaflet "Pets, Wildlife, Customs". Some guidelines:     *  Dogs must be free of evidence of diseases communicable to man when examined at the port of entry. They must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days prior to entry to the U.S. The certificate accompanying the dog should provide an adequate description of the animal, type of vaccine used, and be signed by a licensed veterinarian.     * Cats must be free of evidence of diseases communicable to man. As a general rule, vaccination against rabies is not required for cats, but they are subject to inspection at the port of entry.     * Birds must be presented for inspection to a veterinarian of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) at an official port of entry. You may bring only two personally owned pet birds into the U.S. at one time. In addition to Federal regulations related to the entry of pets, many States, counties and municipalities have restrictions concerning them. It is advisable to check with the authorities at your destination for any special regulations. Customs Clearance of Household Goods It's advisable for you to precede entry of your household goods into the United States, as exemptions to which you are entitled will not be deducted until your arrival. Your availability at time of Customs inspection will prevent unnecessary delays in the clearance of your shipment. In order to expedite Customs clearance and delivery of your household goods, be sure to notify us immediately of your arrival in the U.S. Customs clearance may be accomplished by you, our representatives, or a customs broker. Entry should be filed with Customs without delay after arrival of your household goods shipment. Detailed paperwork is a prerequisite to quick and easy clearance through Customs. A complete inventory or packing list of the items in your shipment, including a comprehensive description of each box, carton, container and suitcase is a must. Make the list out as things are packed, so nothing gets overlooked. Remember, in most cases, Customs officials cannot respond immediately to requests for inspection and clearance. There may be delays of two to five days or more before clearance can be effected, and during that time the shipment must remain in bonded facilities at your expense.
